MANAGEMENT OF EMERGING BUSINESSES (Jiro Kokuryo,Masaki Umejima

1. Objectives/Teaching method

    This course aims at providing students with basic understanding to be a technology entrepreneur: invention, patenting, commercialization, and incorporation.
    Firstly, this course has pursued reality on business development. In delivering many distinguished guest speakers, whose background is diversified from a startup until a successful IPO, students can learn living know-how to make a success on business.
    In 2013, this class invited the distinguished CEO and a founder as follows:
    Mr. Chihito Kusabiraki, CEO, Weather News Inc
    Mr. Eric Gan, Representative Director, eAccess
    Dr. Sureswaran Ramadass, University Saint Malaysia, and founder of Mlabs
    In 2014, added on the last year’s guests, this class will invite new startups and new comer to electric utility market, where Japanese government open in April 2016.
    Secondly, there are many exercise opportunities, where you write up a business plan and learn about decision making process under limited information as same as real business.
    Thirdly, final class assignment is to write a business plan. On a voluntary basis, students can apply SOI Asia Business Plan Contest, hosted by SOI Asia, Asian wide university alliance. In addition, there are precious opportunities for you to present your business plan directly to venture capitalists and business executives.
    Goals of this course are: 1) Foster entrepreneurial mindset, 2) Understand necessary factors for business planning, and 3) Learn know-how to be successful startup.
    Finally, this class makes you easier a career to be an entrepreneur.

    ※Information3: Some lectures are shared by Asian universities in Thailand, Myanmar, Malaysia, and Indonesia, via the satellite connection operated by SOI Asia.

3. SCHEDULE

    To be successful entrepreneur, you need to consider some important aspects: converting your technology [idea] to business plan, organizing management team, and financing business plan.

    #2 Learning about essential components for writing a business plan and the supportive environment for university startup
    After learning about how to write a business plan, you know how university is helpful to a startup. In response to the social demand, university has undertaken the new task to create university startup. That is business and industry development, which originates from university research. Thus, university has the ability to provide many supports to researchers and students through technological patenting, business incubation, and so on. Knowing this environment, it will be important for university startup to manage technology [idea] in process of commercialization.

    #13 Business Plan contest final round
    The selected top performing student teams from Business Plan Contest will present their business plan and response to direct enquiries and comments from a panel of judges, made up of industrial professionals and academics. The students can have the experience of being a “real” entrepreneur to pitch and convince their business plan to the professionals and practice their presentation skills.
