Family, though the smallest social unit, is where influences of social changes are concentrated.
Over the past few decades, Asia has witnessed the emergence of many fast-growing economies. The improvement of economic performance, on one hand, has improved the quality of life for its people. On the other hand, the growth also induced tremendous changes in the structure of society as well. For example, the improved longevity has increased the aging population and therefore added mounting pressure to the shrinking working-age group; the employment structure has witnessed a considerable shrinkage in the agricultural sector and an increase in secondary and tertiary sectors; an increased flow of workers migrating across the countries in Asia. These new developments have changed drastically the structure of family and how its members interact with each other. The change does not simply mean the breakdown of the traditional family (known as extended family) which the emergence of the nuclear family has replaced. Many more new forms of “family” have come to being, e.g., families of crossed cultures, families of cross religions, families of single parents, among others. The diverse environments have produced a new generation of “hybrid individuals,” who may find themselves in either at the advantage of benefiting the differences and diversity or in the state of confusion about their identity.
The workshop is to provide a framework of “families in transition” in order to examine how these changes take place in a family, how family members see the changes and the differences, and how they value family in the new context. Case studies provided by guest speakers will cover a wide range of issues including those in Japan and other countries in Asia.
Possible Topics for Discussion:
- Asia and Changes
- Family: Then and Now
- Independent Elderly
- Hybrid Generation
- Families of Cross Culture/ Religions
