POLICY MANAGEMENT (POLICY MAKING AND SOCIAL INNOVATION)﹛﹋Jiro Kokuryo

1. Objectives/Teaching method

    Policy management is an area in policy science that distinguishes itself by emphasizing acquisition of knowledge through active participation to the contemporary problem solving activities. This course provides an overview of ﹍Policy Management﹎ by introducing some key concepts and research initiatives in the area. After a general introduction, we will place a particular focus on concepts and practices of social innovation that aims at developing entrepreneurship in solving economic, political and social issues.
    The course begins with reading outputs from the ﹍21st Century Center of Excellence (COE)
    -Policy Innovation Initiative: Human Security Research in Japan and Asia-﹎ Project. Students are expected to read a working paper and submit short summaries and comments. This series of readings, in addition to a lecture by the dean of the Graduate School of Media and Governance, will help students to learn fundamental notions of Policy Management. After such an overview, we will invite researchers that are promoting Policy Management studies by actively engaging in real-life issues and extracting generalized findings from such activities.

    #3 Policy making and social
    A lecture and discussion with Professor Ikuyo Kaneko who is the dean of the Graduate School of Media and Governance, as well as the leading scholar in social innovation. He will talk about the vision of social innovation both as a practical movement as well as an academic field.
